One UK Dataset. Three Fidelity Levels.

AIC has built three UK-wide terrain datasets for VBS from high-resolution source data. The product provides scalable national coverage for synthetic training, mission rehearsal and scenario development without forcing every exercise to carry the storage and runtime cost of maximum-fidelity terrain.

Low Fidelity — 20 metres per sample elevation with 10 metres per pixel imagery.

Medium Fidelity — 10 metres per sample elevation with 5 metres per pixel imagery.

High Fidelity — approximately 2–5 metres per sample elevation with 2 metres per pixel imagery.

Each fidelity tier includes an appropriate level of vector uplift derived from multiple sources, with handcrafted refinement used where it materially improves training value and terrain coherence.

The Challenge

Training organisations need broad, recognisable UK terrain for exercises that extend beyond a single high-detail training area. Generic global terrain can lack the visual, topographic and vector context required for credible UK scenarios, while ultra-high-resolution national terrain can impose unnecessary storage and performance cost.

A single fixed dataset therefore forces a compromise between coverage, fidelity and runtime performance.

The Capability

The VBS UK Dataset provides three prepared national fidelity levels from a common high-resolution source base. Customers can select the terrain resolution that matches the training objective, available hardware and scenario scale.

Elevation, imagery, vector data and handcrafted uplift are balanced across the tiers so the same UK operating context can support broad constructive activity, routine classroom training and higher-fidelity visual simulation without rebuilding terrain for every use case.

Controlled Dataset Delivery

The VBS UK Dataset is supplied as licensed simulation content for deployment inside the customer's approved VBS estate. It has no dependency on an AIC-hosted runtime service and can remain within the training environment after controlled delivery.

Customer-specific handling, storage and distribution controls can be applied to the delivered terrain package as required by the deployment environment.
