SYNTHETIC ENVIRONMENT INTEGRATION
SYNAPSE
Real systems. Synthetic environments.
SYNAPSE provides a controlled bridge between VBS and the external systems that need to drive, observe or react to the synthetic battlespace — from flight dynamics and autonomy to hardware, commands, telemetry and events.

Product Type
Simulation Integration Platform
Product Code
AIC-SYN
Deployment
VBS workstation / local training network / centrally hosted gateway services where appropriate / disconnected simulation estate
Key Differentiator
One controlled, extensible VBS integration boundary instead of a separate bespoke plugin for every external system.
Connect Real Systems to the Synthetic Battlespace
SYNAPSE is AIC's integration gateway for connecting VBS4 to external systems, hardware, autonomy, control software and telemetry sources.
Instead of exposing raw simulation SDK calls directly to every integration, SYNAPSE provides a governed command, event and telemetry boundary. External interfaces are normalised, validated and routed through controlled simulation adapters, allowing new integrations to be added without creating uncontrolled point-to-point coupling throughout the training system.
The platform is designed for local-first operation on simulation workstations and training networks, including environments where runtime independence and deterministic integration behaviour are more important than cloud connectivity.
The Challenge
Synthetic training systems become difficult to maintain when every external device, control system, autonomy component or data source receives its own bespoke plugin and direct access to simulation internals.
Point-to-point integrations create duplicated code, inconsistent message handling, weak fault isolation and high cost whenever the simulator, SDK or connected system changes. High-rate state, reliable commands and telemetry also have different transport and timing requirements that should not be forced through a single brittle interface.
The Capability
SYNAPSE provides a native VBS-side gateway that converts external requests into versioned, validated commands and exposes controlled simulation capability through a common routing layer.
The architecture supports reliable command channels, high-rate state paths, native component access, scripting bridges, event publishing and outbound telemetry. A simulation SDK facade isolates VBS-specific implementation from external systems so integrations remain maintainable as the underlying environment evolves.
Operational Outcomes
Connect external systems to VBS through one governed integration boundary.
Reduce bespoke point-to-point simulation plugins.
Separate reliable commands from high-rate state and telemetry flows.
Improve validation, fault isolation and diagnostics across integrations.
Support external flight dynamics, autonomy, hardware and control-system integration.
Enable bidirectional command, state, event and telemetry exchange.
Maintain local-first operation on training networks and disconnected estates.
Create a reusable integration layer that can expand as training requirements evolve.
Controlled Integration Boundary
SYNAPSE is designed to prevent external systems from receiving uncontrolled access to raw simulation SDK functions. Commands are normalised, validated and routed through defined interfaces, creating a clearer boundary for logging, policy enforcement and fault isolation.
The runtime is local-first and can remain within the training network. Transport security, component signing and deployment hardening are applied according to the target VBS environment and customer assurance requirements.
Capabilities
VBS4 native integration; command routing; TCP; UDP; MQTT; native C++ API; script/SQF bridge; telemetry; event publishing; external state injection; entity control; camera integration; autonomy and hardware integration; diagnostics; local-first runtime
Integrations
VBS4; VBS Simulation SDK; Gears Studio/runtime; TCP; UDP; MQTT; C++; SQF/script interfaces; Control AI; ArduPilot/MAVLink integration pathways; external hardware and control systems
Identity Support
Integration and transport authentication is deployment-specific; SYNAPSE primarily provides machine-to-machine simulation integration.
Data Residency
Local-first. Command, state and telemetry exchange can remain entirely within the customer training network.
Encryption
Transport and component-security controls are selected to the target VBS environment and customer assurance profile.
