What a pan‑European ‘drone wall’ would actually look like: sensors, EW, interceptors, standards, and how to mesh with NATO corridors and national systems.

Europe’s Drone Wall: Building a Continental Shield

Europe is moving from pilot projects to serious discussion about a continent‑scale network to detect and defeat hostile drones. Coverage by Reuters, BBC, and defence analysts at Janes and Defense News has highlighted the trend toward layered Counter‑UAS (C‑UAS) that integrates surveillance radars, RF sensing, EO/IR, and electronic attack with kinetic interceptors.

Architecture. A “drone wall” is less a fence and more a software‑defined fabric. It fuses radar returns with RF detection and ADS‑B/Mode S correlation, then classifies objects via computer vision. Tracks flow through hardened APIs using mutual TLS and signed telemetry (see NCSC identity guidance). Edge compute handles time‑critical fusion; cloud back‑ends manage history and model updates. Standards from NATO IAMD and OGC support interoperability.

Effectors. Electronic warfare and jamming, radio deception, and kinetic systems form a layered response. Directed‑energy and high‑power microwave systems are advancing (see reporting in The Register), but safety cases and integration are non‑trivial. Shot doctrine economics matter: saturation, not single drones, is the true challenge.

Policy & sovereignty. Any EU‑wide architecture must respect national sovereignty, export controls (GOV.UK export control), and data protection (ICO). Zero‑trust architectures (NCSC) and federated mission networking (NATO FMN) offer practical blueprints.

Where AIC can contribute. Sensor fusion middleware, EW payload integration, interceptor autonomy, and resilient C2 back‑ends aligned with open standards. Exportability and rapid certification will be key to adoption.
